Meu Malvado Favorito (1,2 e) 3 / Despicable Me (1, 2 and) 3

Os Dois Outros

Eu,...

Tendo visto o trailer, eu me sentia justificado.

Começa a parecer forçado...

The Other Two

I,...Don't have the best of opinions when it comes to the "Despicable Me" franchise. It's just that... I need to be in a REALLY REALLY right mood for the jokes to work. A squid weapon is interesting, and the presentation of Vector is interesting... The rest of the character's participation in the first movie is quite predictable and at the same level of jokes used as filler in a cartoon.

Likewise, in the second movie we have the only reasonably rational character -the oldest daughter -being irrational, which could be interesting... But, they preferred to xerox copy EVERY SINGLE STORY OF A TEENAGER FALLING IN LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT IN THE HISTORY OF HUMANITY.  What was supposed to be the main part of the plot is a legendary villain that will, without a doubt, show up and whose identity is just there the second you see the character, pointed out by the linguistic difference, bby the importance given to what should be a secondary character, etc... Again, little is worth anything. I remember, for instance, that the girlfriend seeing Gru's face everywhere worked at first because he really has such a noticeable face, but the joke seemed to go on for too long.

I didn't see the minions' movie. In fact, something I liked various times were the SHORT parts by the minions. They have great potential to be more cartoony, in this world where script writers unfortunatelly don't want to be cartoony. The end of the first movie, for instance, could've been a good cartoon if it were more polished.

In the second, as far as I remember, they were not particularly good. the impression I had was that the writers said "They liked these kinder egg capsules painted yellow!? Who would've guessed... Well then, now we have to treat them as main characters..." So, we had parts that were too long and scarcely funny, again, that you'd see as filler in a cartoon between the better jokes.

The ideas are clear... Actually, I should say PAINFULLY OBVIOUS, but the result is usually average or worse... Nothing terribly interesting or particularly memorable, save for the rare exceptions...

The Third

So, when my wife asked me to go see the third movie, I wasn't extremely optimistic. Having seen the trailer, I felt justified. And, therefore, here's the first thing to make clear here: THE TRAILER WAS MADE WITH THE PREVIOUS MOVIES MENTALITY.

I'm not saying the movie is great, but it's better than what it might seem like from the trailer. To put it simply: if you liked the other two movies, watch it. This one is better. Not much better, but with a few better moments.

The plot in itself is not particularly good. A villain whose premise is more or less -being obsessed with the 80s -But, with good development. His visual, his musical weapon and his helper make sense with the idea, as well as other things used throughout the movie. His attitude, on the other hand, is... Silly.

Someone obsessed for having gotten attention becoming a super villain has its logic, and even watching himself in his glory days could make sense: as self justification... As depressive contemplation... As a form of self delusion, maybe... And I'm not complaining of this idea not being explored. In fact, I don't see how to do it without changing drastically the villain's role. Him being a fun, unrepentant villain is good.

The problem is him "dance fighting" -Because no one ever danced before or after the 80s. It's him using gum as a weapon -Because no one ever chewed gum before or after the 80s. and, specially, it's that the useful parts of his villany are not characteristic of the pallet which he's supposedly obsessed for. When the script writers need a way to get him out of a room, he uses... A hook gun.

When he starts dancing while invading the ship in the beginning, it's good -It would've been great, but they decided to use it on the trailer and everyone knows half the jokes in the scene. Moonwalking on the water is great, him dancing as the gum bubble attackks the guards on the ship is good. He seems to be having fun. when he keeps at it, even being alone, even knowing he is chased... It starts to seem forced... And it doesn't go back to normal.

If you saw the trailer and didn't notice any 80s on that gun he points at Gru, that's what I'm talking about. He is a villain whose characterization, which would make him a good character, is almost completely optional. When he needs something that isn't "80s", suddenly his obsession for the decade disappears. He basically has a useless calling card... He is a wet bandit...

The minions, on the other hand, were well used... I know, I know. I was surprised too. The beginning of their part is, unfortunately, quite standard. However, after establishing their situation, they have a funny scene that leads them to an even funnier situation. And, amazingly, they were not shoved in front of the camera every five seconds. One or two jokes weren't wonderful, but they don't last long. They are well thought out , after the unfunny start.

the big invention of Gru having a brother is no big deal. It's another Gru, with a personality that's a bit different, but his part is just as good. That is, mediocre. The plot, though, has a really good idea: the ending. I won't spoil it, but it's a way to get what they seemed to be wanting since the second movie, but simply wasn't there...

And, by the way, credits a la Pink Panther. It seems Illumination finally accepted they were making a cartoon... And a comedy...

Besides that, the movie is, yet again, a number of jokes that seem to be filler and with reasonable execution, when that good... Watch it if you liked the others, and, if not, at least it isn't as bad as the others. It's much more memorable, if nothing else.

Lanternas Verdes #1 / Green Lanterns #1

Eis algo bom e novo do renascimento: Lanternas Verdes me deixou intrigado.

E, a meu ver, bem sucedida.

Here' something good and new about rebirth: Green Lanterns #1 made me intrigued.

I didn't care much for the book from before the event, but the Krona's glove really was a particularly bad point. It was another attempt to say "the hero is awesome", when in reality they just gave him a bigger gun, which was added to the EXTREMELY TIRESOME idea of chosen one.

But, post-renaissance, Hal Jordan leaves his "emerald infinity gauntlet" (which uses every power in Marvel Super Heroes, but only against those not wearing yellow) to go back to his normal.

It doesn't make sense, of course. Even if wearing the glove were a risk, in his situation it could be more than necessary, but here, outside the DC universe,  it's something hugely satisfactory for a reader. Much like other rebirth books I've commented on, it's a wink to say "we know we shat the bed" and regain the reader's trust. And, from my point of view, a successful one. I want to know what happened to the green lanterns and how the universe reseter is going to save the corps now that he is just a cop with a gun again. And a gun of his own making he chooses over a more powerful one he's had has great poetic value for future stories.

Before this story (originally published in Hal Jordan and The Green Lanterns Corps: Rebirth 1, ...Just the title's length gets me out of breath), we have three stories (originally published in Green Lanterns: Rebirth 1, Green Lanterns 1 e 2) showing the carriers of two new green lanterns starting, forced to be partners by Hal Jordan. We have some cop story tropes and a big threat to be fought that's a bit too tossed in. "Hey! Problems! Solve'em!" That's not a problem in itself, but a characteristic of the story. It's action. It wasn't particularly great, but fun. The personalities are still a bit flat, but they start with at least an interesting trace.

My critical sense does point out that there being a latin woman and a middle-east dude is a bit on the nose, the same way him being impulsive and her anxious is too, but that's where it stops, so it's not stereotypical. They even start the book pointing out how the earth lanterns were beneficial because of their diversity, but then you see it's Atrocitus talking and ask "Why would an enemy calling his adversaries problems be speaking well of them? In fact, why is the lord of wrath calmly commenting?"

But, for entertainment purposes, they're not big problems. Just don't think about them too hard or green smoke might come out of you...

In fact, the only major problem I've had with the book is Bleez sexualized on the last page of the first story, with blood running out his mouth, seemingly appreciating the situation in front of Atrocitus, to then be shown held by the neck by him raging. She herself shows her confusion with her first line, becuase this doesn't fit what had happened.

Yet, it's really just a detail. It's like that red lantern cat: seeing him there just because he is recognizable is a bit annoying. He doesn't do anything in the story, just like Bleez lying with her hand almost there. At least Dex-starr reminds us fury can come from anywhere...

Mulher Maravilha Renascida / Wonder Woman Reborn

I'm still very early in my reading of Dc's Rebirth, but Wonder Woman's first book was a pleasent surprise.

Until before the event, the stories seemed to be "Hey! Mythology! ...If Sups were a Spartan woman..." Yes, there were one or two "spirit of justice" moments tô justificar everything (not even "of truth", I must say), but it was all so... Empty.

The closest to interesting I can remember was Wondie trying to free the Ciclops and being implied they were paying for their crimes and she would just be being fair by choosing not to free them yet. But, it went nowhere and it was but a moment in a chapter of "Brothers and Sisters from Olympus." I guess it was, at least, better than the Globo soap operas in which there'll be magic, but, after the beginning, no one remembers there were powers involved.

In her first book in this phase, Wondie becomes wonderful going back to wearing her gold (even though I prefer a waist area less full of leather and details), in a montage that does what Sups's first seemed to be trying to do.

However, instead of trying to justify a new phase as "enough mourning", in this case the idea is clearly a criticism to the continuous changes to the character, suggesting not only that they were not so natural, but that they shouldn't have happened. The character herself seems to feel bad for letting herself be taken by such changes, criticizing her attitude so far (or "lack there of").

It's a great story with Wonder Woman retaking her lasso in search for truth and the lead of her life, which also shows better scenery and shows her enemy being really a threat, instead of the old and tiresome "Who's stronger?" whose answer EVERYONE already knows. Congrats to DC.

Too bad Brazilian fans still can't sub to just her book...

Do nada...

What could've been, what could still be and what is." No original é rápido. No nosso é lento.

Queixo e abaixo do tórax escurecidos, veias e olhos brilhando vermelho.

A capa do número 1 do Renascimento é melhor.

Well, as followers of the channel might remember, I subscribe to DC comics through Panini. In fact, I'd prefer immensely to read the DC's current comics, but, since it's not doable, this over-a-year-late version is the closest I can get.

And yes, I'm saying both DC and Panini should do everything in their power to lessen this gap. The graphic production time seems to be plenty to get it all translated. With the script translated, be it by DC or Panini, and the art done, the difference between the two releases could be shorter. I'd think it could be one or two weeks, or even zero.

DC's Rebirth got to Brazil and I have here my first books, late,of course, because subscribing doesn't guarantee getting them the same day the newsstands of my city do. By the way, going back to the globalization issue, not only there isn't a reason for this or the other delay happening, they make much of the impact of the each story be diminished. Yeap, Panini, you must be loosing plenty of readers because every other way of knowing about the story has time to win readers over who might not want to read your version.

And, I know I'm getting off-topic, but since we're talking about panini, why not contact your clients to offer the "DC Unvierse: Rebirth" comic? The first page of Superman's comic suggests it's a relevant read -And many, such as myself, would've liked to have read it before -So, why not ease the access? Probably or the same reason I saw articles done on Wonder woman's first comic before I got my first Rebirth comic; screw the reader.

Panini, people like me sub because they don't have a lot of time. I literally haven't bought Spiderman/Dedpool #3 for lack of time, and haven't yet gotten that one and #4 because, when I have time, I don't have access to a newsstand that takes cards (the end of the month sucks). And even if you are counting more on children clients, do you really want parents to give up on subscriptions because the comics take too long? Children wanting something asap is a thing, you know.

In fact, I have no doubts you would have many more subscribers if the options weren't "everything from a ppublishing house" or "half of everything from a publishing house." It can't be that difficult to have distribution similar to newspapers, each comic book having their own subscription and hundred or thousands of fans being able to sub because then they don't need to follow several series at once.

But, back to the issue: I still haven't read Superman 52, the same way I still haven't finished The Shadow of the Batman -the last numbers of these before Rebirth (Brazil numbering). At the same time, I was somewhat hopeful with Rebirth. Comments from a youtuber I follow, Linkara, suggest the first year of Rebirth were a real change in the way stories were written, leading to stories about superheroes, instead of the very common "this dude's dark" or "this dude's awesome', almost always not having any personality.

This is the reason for this little experiment. I waited to read Superman 52 and Superman 1 together. The idea is to compare and see if the change was really noticeable. I didn't read Rebirth so far, but no event should make too big a difference to the series itself. So, let's go:

The Horrible End

First, the before: Heart of Steel (title on the cover that doesn't seem to have any relation to the stories and just makes me want to see Batman TAS -Not to be confused with the Tasmanian Devil) is a horrible book, but still a slightly less horrible one than the previous ones. Even with the silly idea of "if everybody is fucking awesome the readers will like it", it seems an ending will still wake the writer up.

It's two stories that end the arc of Superman x Vandal Savage (originally published in Superman/Wonderwoman 27 and Superman 50).

The first, Cair Matando (sounds somewhat like "Beating Down"), is a long and dull fight. I care as much for seeing superheroes fighting without any punch as I do for reading Wonder Woman -Who had literally fought to be a goddess of war closer to Athena than to Ares -making a reference to The Fast and The Furious.

It's quite appropriate, since it's a series of movies that shows the ideas permeating this arc in how shallow they are. "But, I like watching the cars and the races!" Great. It's like the Transformers series from Michael Bay. I didn't like the transformers full of moving parts. It's too many things that don't do much, in my opinion, but you could prefer that version more full of parts. Neither means the movies are good as movies.

The most I can say is that there is a bit of parallel between Superman and Vandal Savage shown in the end, in a chase that continues not having any punch to the reader, and that one image -just one -had a slight punch: the last page, in which the huge meteor makes them both dark. It's ruined by Vandal saying boring stuff, but, at least, it does give the impression of something big and powerfull. And... VANDAL HAS A GENKI DAMA!

The second story starts with the two fighting, still without much impact to the reader. This, however, doesn't seem to be due to the previous one's attitude of "let's make them all fight and everyone will automatically like", but for the foolish, FOOLISH idea to have Superman without any doubt about being able to win.

this is what I mean when I say that "This dude's awesome" doesn't work. Superman being superpowerful is nothing new. But, the same way that giving everybody kriptonite as it has been done just shows you can't handle this problem (cough cough lead clothes, cough cough), just increasing the adversary's strength does the same.

Just consider one of his biggest enemies: Darkside. Superman has defeated the being that is basically a god, but his continuous reinvention of how he attacks him creates new threats, battles against him always being problematic and always being threats to the rest of the world, which Superman always wants to protect. He isn't the enemy in "Justice League: War" (No, I didn't like that one. In fact, every animation based on the "New 52" lost a lot comparing to the previous ones)

Vandal Savage uses the meteor to put neon on his hair and... Pause to repeat a trope without any reason. Superman sees Kripton saved by Savage. He's still himself and interacts normally with the people there, so THERE IS NO WAY HE COULD THINK THIS IS REAL, but Savage tries to convice him it's worth having a tirant like himself in charge.

When that doesn't work ('Breathes in'... DUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh), he shows Earth under his domain. And, here's a small compliment: the cript forces Superman to spend more time in this illusion (no, it's not well implemented. It happens because the script says so), suggesting the others he sees could be pople also put into this fake world of his. This leads him to fight under Savage's command and he feels good fighting for the good of the city.

The compliment, though, is limited to that. Superman fighting side-by-side with others that attack their enemies savagely makes no sense. Him dinning with Savage and accepting to continue as a general after that makes no sense. And, especially, Savage using his friends as slaves while trying to convince him doesn't make sense.

Finally, he wakes up, decides he has to do what every person knows he is going to decide -And would have decided much MUCH faster to do when well-written -Does the gravity altering thing to fly from the movie and goes after Savage.

Whiel Savage keeps pushing the meteor agains the Earth for his "new beginning" (he couldn't fly, but now he has hair like fire as Starfire does, so...), Puzzler, in a version similar to the horrible visuals of Metallo, is sent to destroy Superman, but decides to talk, for no reason, and turns against his "father."

This clearly seems to be an idea forced for something they wanted to do later, as with Savage disappearing, the excuse being that the being that could be as strong as Superman and tht they show flying was thrown into space. Oh, and Lois and Clark love each other... Out of nowhere... Maybe there had been a rerun of their series, or something...

Just to finish, we have Superman, flying besides an awkward dove (it seems to be landing rather than flying), together with a gigantic title "O que poderia ter sido, o que ainda pode ser e o que É." And add some more "é" there, because it's a damn big É. In English, these phrases could be much smaller. I couldn't find the title, but I'm guessing something like "What could've been, what could still be and what is." It's not an issue of the size of the words, but of how they sound. In the original it's fast. In Portuguese it's slow. The original isn't good either if it's such -And it's possible that it was done better -But, it seems like the title was translated for meaning alone, and this aesthetic issue ended up on the side. In a piece of art, aesthetics clearly should be important.

Rebirth

On the covers you cna already see a clear difference between the two in the intention. The cover for the previous comic has Superman broken into a boomerang, his legs down with slight distortion and flight lines, though his chest is pointing down too. Lines on the dark abdomen that remind me of Marvel's Punisher. Chin and below the chest darkened, veins and red glowing eyes. All of that in front of lightning and a... Green sky? I thought the kriptonite poisoning part was over..., But, who is this guy pretending to be the man of steel and seemingly wanting to act like... the man of steel... from the movie... Maybe the kriptonite has caused a psychological effect (Yes, I like Public enemies).

Rebirth's number 1's cover is better. By the way, DC and Panini, this is the time to have something on the top as it was done here. It's a way to say to readers "Hey! We have something you might like!" It shouldn't be used to "promote the current movie." Or do you think I'm going to buy extra books that come with their covers ruined?

We have the symbol prominent, the characters in the center, and colors around them formed by scenes and characters still unknown (maybe it's something from Rebirth, but I haven't read it yet). It's still a bit dark, in my opinion. But, at least, it seems to try to interest the reader, instead of just saying "this dude's awesome." This might have something to do with the first story having been originally published in "Superman: Rebirth 1", Whose cover still is a serious Superman, flying forward and with red eyes of EEEEEEEVILLLL.

The two stories are more interesting that the ones before already at the start. They do seem to be a little too dark still. I won't talk much about the stories themselves because it's not necessary, but the idea of a superman coming out of a period of mourning in the first is particularly interesting to say to the reader "People... Our bad. We'll try to stop with that."

The second story, originally published in "Superman 1", focus on Superman's son rapidly establishing the family's situation. I must say that, as much as I understand the idea of the boy having to adapt to his power, the "problem" he has doesn't get the importance it deserves. I know, I know... He's embarassed, doesn't know what to do...

But, we have a witness and a boy that seems to care about the world, the two deciding to just not talk about it. I really don't believe the boy proud of his father caring so much about the world would hide such a big thing that involves someone he loves.

End of the day...? Good intentions, possibly on the right way, but still not quite there. Those who decided to wait a bit more wouldn't be wrong.

Guardiões da Galáxia 2/ Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Sim, eu sei... Or.

English:

Yes, I know... Everybody's seen it... It's just that I'm a teacher, worker and have no time... Er.
I don't even know how much more time I would have had. But, wnating to see Power Rangers, I found out I would have to go to Paracambi for that, so, GG2 before I loose out on another ticket.
Over all, it's probably a movie slightly inferior to the previous one. Too many things happening to have a simple structure, I'd say. That, however, does not mean it is bad. On the contrary. If you thought the first movie was a 9, this would be a 8.75, with moments perhaps even better than the ones in the first. One such moments is the ending, which I won't describe, but it goes as long as to be two scenes back to back, and still carries a somber moment well throughout this time. I CRIED! I cried, and for... Yeap.
Of course, it wouldn't be inferior to the other if there were no flaws. In general, those are mmoments in which the... "moment" seems a bit forced. It doesn't happen too much, but some 3 times at least. Another issue that's particularly problematic is the characterization of two characters: Drax and Rocket Racoon. Without spoiling anything, because the characters have more time, it's expected their characterization would be more important, but it happens in a more forced manner up to the conclusion of such arcs. In the case of Rocket it is particularly bad.
When talking about Nebula, I don't know if it's bad characterization itself. There are parts that seem forced for a human being in that situation, but not exactly for Nebula.
However, it's not exactly something saying "she's a warrior", but "she's insane." Again, I admit, the two aspects were already there in the other movie as far as I remember, but the balance between them seems a bit off.
the biggest issue to me, in this case as well as with the villain is not if it mtches the comic, which I don't think it does, but if it matches the universe itself. In the villain's case, yes, even if the ending seemed to need more attention towards him in the climax.
So, great songs, only one not feeling great and just good, wonderful interaction, humor that's good to very good, some jokes being a part of the forced storytelling, a very good plot, great fight scenes, despite some three slips, 5 if you count the 2 minor ons in the end. WATCH IT! Even if you've seen it already, watch it again!

Homem-Aranha e Deadpool #2

Well, I think there really isn't much to say... Except that things flipped around in this book.
The first story (originally published in Spider-Man/Deadpool 2) was less funny than the previous one. The situations are closer to the ironic than the sarcastic, which would be smarter, or of causing laughter.

That doesn't mean the story isn't interesting, but it was as interesting as before, only minus the humor. The ending, once again, leaves me worried. The not so heavy atmosphere becomes heavy, making me think the creators were too interested in the inhumanity Deadpool has demonstrated in the past, and not interested enough in what connects the two characters. The humor.

It's like Liefeld saying he created the character, or the producers of Wolverine: Origins saying the character was represented. It'd be technically true, but for that you'd have to ignore a good chunk of what makes the character interesting. It's almot as if the red lines from Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe had drunk yellow paint to disguise themselves...

The second story (originally published in Deadpool and the Mercs for Money 2), on the other hand, was much better than in the previous book. The cliffhanger set in the end of the last book is well-developed quite nicely, creating funny situations that could make us ask "how did this happen?" (at one point they offer Mephisto the robot... I thought he only cared about marriages), but the humor is too good so you won't want to miss how it develops.

Intrigued for the next one. Will they reverse again? Will the humor be good in both stories? Could the authors be fans of Rob Liefeld and start drawing everything muscly grotesque, influenced by thoughts in red? Could Panini start trying to lessen the imense delay between the American and Brazilian publications?
That last one is probably a "no", but at least I don't think there'll be nazi heroes.

Homem-Aranha e Deadpool #1

Pinguim Pool vale a pena.

English:

Yes, it's been a while. But, fo those who haven't read number 1 of this new book (originally published in Spider-man/Deapool 1), here's a quick review.
The idea is relatively simple: Spider-Man -known for pop references and ironies amidst heroism -Joins la Piscina de los Muertos -known for his acid attitude (including towards himself [would parenthesis between dashes be too much? {then again, where else would I use brackets and curly brackets}]) for adventures with a more humorous tone.
the book immediately points out this spin-off will always have a story with the two and a story with Deadpool an his gang of mercenaries, which isn't exactly good...
the second story introduces, [at least to unfamiliar readers such as myself], interesting characters such as a living cartoon or another who deserves being called Piscina de Los Muertos even more than Deadpool himself. The problem is that the tone was more of actiony than comedic.
Interesting characters, some more so than even Spidey and... Deady -{I don't want to entice rule 34, but I know I am...} -Whose ironies and sarcasm, howeve, are reduced to details... A lot of setting up the story and little development... The merceneries stole something for someone, those who'd received it were killed and the killers attack, and they then find out what they stole.
I must say the adversaries are, at least, interesting. The theme would be too ridiculous in most other stories, but it woks here. Unfortunately, it's just a fight scene... The following end seems to simply bank on the idea presented as enough to intrigue the read, rather than developing the situation.
The main story, on the other hand, was much better. the interaction between the two seemed force... Because it was... And gave the impression it'd be the unfortunate sadistic humor seen in so many places still Today limping along since the 90s.
On the second page, however, I was laughing and the interactions seemed genuine. It's one of those stories that mustn't be overly detailed because they deserve to be read and experienced first hand.
Deadpool's insanity is fun, though the revelation in the end is worrisome to me... Why? Well, it slightly suggests that Deadpool might change his tune, which seem to me not to be a good idea. The presentation in the second story is not even very different from this one's, and it's already less effective.
The translation has its slightly bothersome moments, like when you see that the "merc with a mouth" becomes simply "tagarela" (chatty in free translation, without even the impact of "chatterbox"or the aliteration, evidently).
Still, there are scenes genuinely funny... Penguin Pool is worth it.
