English

Kakegurui is an anime that takes advantage of impact scenes and shock value. This, unfortunately, doesn't mean smart -Which in turn, doesn't mean bad.

The animation is gorgeous and the designs, for the most part, are very good. The choices as to representation are also quite effective, though some might seem too over the top due to their pelvic aspect.

Yes, this anime uses the freudian representation of pleasure as sexual. Not for food as the foodgasms, but for betting and the like. The need for showing the character's attitude is clear, and when this happens in an anime particularly aimed at shock value, this alternative becomes common.

In a way, it's uncomfortable how this can be used to say an anime is "more adult", but this usually demonstrates a childishness or lack of skill by the characters, which seems interesting to me. this case is particularly childish, but, fortunately, it didn't make me miss the storyline, being more of a detail than anything else.

It's worth mentioning also that this anime -even if perfectly comprehensible to a Brazilian person such as myself -makes use of some more Japanese tropes and references for its shocks. Yes, a student walking around with a six shooter is uncommon, but I'm sure it would be more shocking for a Japanese person amid a society where fire weapons are quite uncommon. It probably would even more for an American, whose society has been suffering with frequent cases of students carrying guns.

the script, however, suffers for always trying to create impacts and failing to follow premises it had established.

An example of that -Not going into spoilers -Is the main character herself. she first is characterized as a homie to the "blank" from No Game No Life, sherlockly noticing details others don't realize and understanding her asversaries' machinations; at the same time, she has no noble motivation as the detective's cryptic head: she likes the rush, the adrenaline that comes from betting and secifically, the possibility of losing even her life.

While such choices make the character absolutely intriguing and interesting at times, in others she seems to be completely at the mercy of circumstances, which can be quite frustrating to the spectator. Someone who admires her resourcefulness while in control can feel the anime loses its purpose when this happens, and it seemed forced when it happened.

Simultaneously, there are some moments of pure ex machinicity, for which not only there needs to be a deity involved, the main character has to be Haruhi Suzumiya herself and be aware of it to prepare herself as she does.

Having the premises in mind, the anime that comes to mind is Mirai Nikki. If you compare them, the script failures become clearer. Both have an extreme situation, both force characters into making extreme choices, both use appealing visuals to distract the spectator and inrease the impact when it comes. The difference would be that this one focuses on the Yuno of the story, which stays somewhere between the two aspects previously discussed.

The impact in Kakegurui, however, doesn't work so well in all their scenes for two reasons: one, the unawareness mentioned, which unfortunately didn't occur just to the main character; and two, the contrivance that occurs at certain points, whose frequency -unfortunately -increases as the episodes go by.

Still not going into details, it was something desappointing to see the last confrontation being so randonly silly. The solution to that dilemma having some impact for its future influence, but just stopping and thinking let's you see that what happens occurs by luck, and that the premise of the gambler's skill as the main factor had been abandoned for that. the little impact is even further reduced by the result being an impass, taking the final reward to be just the possibility of a second season.

The promissing beginning doesn't stop the mistakes along the way, but it seems clear some choices here were more utilitarian than really useful.

Stretch Armstrong

This review has light spoilers.

The world of cartoons is full of series made to sell toys, and Stretch Armstrong is in this group. Quite frankly, it's not a bad approach, as long as the story is well done.

When I started watching the series, I thought it would be another poorly made cartoon to make people buy toys, but I must say the first stories surprised me. There's always an unfortunate 'I want the character like this, so this is him" aspect. Characters have powers because they do and that's it. Think Dr. Suzuki in Batman Beyond. So there is a magical element that creates powers.

That, however, isn't exactly new. Even a good series has its Willy Watts getting telekinesis -Between us, if he had become a technomancer, it would make a lot more sense. -And if it's well executed, any bad origin can generate a good story.

I must say, though it's not stelar, while in the enemy introduction phase, it works well. You can appreciate the design, wih simple lines, but good effect. It could be better, of course, but I would say it's low quality.

The series really stops working in the last episodes of the season, when the priorities unfortunately change. The visual quality drops a bit, which is particularly noticeable at points, but the story itself suffers the most, since the characters that had some development so far are forced into situations to create drama that doesn't work for being basic tropes.

In fact, there is no point in which the big baddy really works. He is introduced without history, with powers and unexplained knowledge, for his identity to be revealed in a inefficient end of the season after a few episodes trying to show him as a big threat, almost always to no effect.

While he shows up as a person capable of granting powers, an atmosphere of influence is created, and he is a villain who can plan any situation and make it happen. When he openly manipulates the heroes it'd predictable and inefficient, and when he openly executes his plans, they are as basic and standard as possible. "oh, the villain wants and army", I'm so surprised! And it doesn't matter if they are monsters, if not half an episode later a solution is found.

The same way a heroic sacrifice isn't worth a damn if yo don't believe the hero is really going to loose; Rferences to better series don't make any difference towards your product's quality, specially if the series don't have the same target audience. And it's particularly noticeable when you make a reference to Rick and Morty, a series that stands out for how smarts its scripts are, and you solve the conflict with a deus ex machina.

As I said before, it's a problem with the priorities. It's clear watching the end of the season that the bad decisions are due to wanting to force a specific situation for the second season. The funniest thing is that there is no reason for this. The situation isn't bad, was reasonably established, and it was going fine until trying to force a drastic change towards "something interesting", making something standard and abandoning what was working... Unfortunately, this is common...

Orville x Star Trek: Uma Nova Esperança / A New Hope

English

Orville is Star Trek. More than Star Trek.

Ok, ok, let's go back a bit. I saw the series already knowing the controversies to a point. For those unaware, many fans of Star Trek have been feeling on The Incredible Journey bound to find their home.

The movies became for a more open audience and some fans felt alienated by the lack of sci-fi stories closer to the original style (no, a military ship near another planet is not that different from a military project hidden on Earth. You're just talking about taking the Galactic Express 999 and getting of on the last station... That's all...)

On top of that, the series many were waiting for, Discovery, went from being a continuation of the original universe to being something in the movie universe, went from being episodic to being closer to a saga, and its captain doesn't follow the others' tradition of honor and cunning, always looking for the best way to solve everyone's problems. And he klingons have to be more terrible, more inhuman, more bloodthirsty. Because instead of its audience, Star Trek prefers to loose all trying to please people that already have a zillion and a half action movies with slight Sci-Fi inflence (Do you think SyFy works? I prefere Sci-fi.)

I, as an occasional fan, always felt the presentation of the characters was somewaht muted, but there were personal growth moments on occasion. The idea always seemed to be crew as a whole being the focus, and that focusing too much on a character would ruin the fun.

So, when The Orville starts with a variation on the original formula -Specifically focusing on the captin and how he got his ship - I didn't think it was bad, but it looked like it was going to be similar and that the comedy could get in the way.

Fortunately, not only has the series followed the crew as a whole, since then the humour -Though more noticeable than in the oiginal series -Doesn't seem to be a problem. In fact, the series basically follows the same mold of Star Trek or Next Generation, setting the characters in interesting situations, showing their skills and developing their interaction.

While I don't find the movies bad (haven't seen the last one) and found Discovery interesting, I not only understand why a fan would be disappointed and irritated when the promises to the fandom were abandoned, I feel much more an intention to present interesting exploration stories, science fiction and character interaction in The Orville then in Discovery, where seems to be a need to "be epic", have monstrous threats, and "keep the audience entertained for every second." Because there's no bigger fear to a producer than the notion of making something for a specific audience. Everything has to be a success with everyone...

And if you, as me, was worried about Seth MacFarlane talking about touchy subjects, I must say it was all very well-made and the topics were well-discussed. The nightmare of having the majority judging you was particularly scary for me, seeing how the Social Justice movement and Intersectional Feminism are influencing Europe and North America at the moment.

Having seeing the last episodes of Discovery, maybe the whole idea was establishing the mirror universe in the movie universe, having Lorca as the fugitive he is and creating a twist in the original formula. Deep Space 9 is more stationary, Voyager is lost, Discovery is chased. Or maybe it's more of an abstract attempt to have an arc, be it the war iitself or Lorca living in the normal universe. In both cases, I feel a lot was sacrificed to get to this.

The original formula has its cheesy moments, but that's par for the course for the fans. The new formula in Discovery made me once again, as so many recently, say "it ain't bad, but don't use that name!" And The Orville's formula resembles the original more. If there's less comedy in the second season, as their intention seems to be, maybe the fans will finally have what they are looking for -And get the satisfaction of a company loosing an audience they had after baiting with a name and switching on the execution.

Episódios 1 / Episode 1s

Como sempre, mudança de planos. Nada gigantesco.

Eis o primeiro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYISQ32F-f4

As usual, change of plans. Nothing huge. I 'm just spending the weekend somewhere else and forgot a file I needed to be able to continue editting the next review, so, in order to keep busy, I recorded a few Episode 1s.

The big issue with Episode 1s is that, at the start of the season, it's practically impossible to see it all and talk about it all and edit the recording without delay. But, 3 recorded, 1 editted, and using the other recordings depends only on how much time I'll rest or not this weekend. It's very likely I'll do at least these three, but not in a hurry...

Feliz Ano Novo/Happy New Year

Feliz 2018, pessoas!

Happy 2018, people! Did you have a nice end of the year?

After a pretty difficult year, that already followed a bad year, I hope to start the year well. And for that, the channels start with a review on the first day of the year.

The work on the second review has already started. I intend to solve a storyline I started centuries ago, when the Earth was young (did you think of the anime girl? I thought of the anime girl...) and dinosaurs strolled through yards. Thankfully Youtube didn't demonetize for no reason and we could work in our caves...

I know I've said that before, but the channels should have two reviews a month and a live a week (on the channel in Portuguese). Unfortunately, I almost always leave a hole on that schedule, and I can't promise I won't, but outside of sleeping a bit more, I intend to work as much as possible in this beginning of year to make a few extra reviews, in case I'm late.

Something I don't intend on doing until I'm more ahead on the schedule are the extra videos. The series Top 5, The Geekdom of Nerdiness, The Best and the Worst, though quicker to make -An already on hold for a while for sheer lack of time -As well as mini reviews here, are on hold until I've done a considerable part of the schedule or am tired of working in the reviews themselves and need to work on something different or faster to make.

If you follow the channel in english, I might've noticed there are a few videos missing, including the ones that start the narrative I intend to conclude... I kina wanted to make their versions in English, but that's probably not going to happen so soon, since just making enough videos to follow the schedule is likely to take me all of my free time... One day, I'll make'em... Maybe...

Anyway, how about a review to start the year off right?

English

I'm not a Trekkie. I saw and liked episodes, as much as I found episodes too slow, be it in the original series, in Next Generation or Voyager. I've never seen more than two or three episodes of Deep Space Nine, so I can't say if it'd  be better, worse or similar.

Discovery is to me another attempt to understand better the universe, which has been quite interesting, but never to the point of wanting to follow every episode of any of its versions. And... this is the same,... Some episodes are good, others are slower than they should be... With a few differences.

the opening itself is a good analogy. Pretty visuals, slow unraveling... And I kinda miss Shatner's voiceover (Yes, I know he screwed the singer with that speech).

I can easily say the series seemed a bit more interesting generally speaking. Fans, however, might not like how less episodic and more of an arc. The episodes aren't poorly structured, but it is noticeable how they present aspects of the war between the Federation and the Klingons more than the episodes scenario itself.

The arc in question isn't bad. Its conclusion, in fact, I find very good, demonstrating something I've always valued in the series: victoy and sacrifice being to save others, against enemies with antiquated ideas of honor.

I must, though, say that, as much as it's been interesting so far, it is worrisome how much of the series is dedicated just to the war, and the end of episode 9, with a conclusion soon after a cliffhanger being resolved and giving interesting consequences to the scenario, followed by a possible change in the status quo.

Future episodes might be closer to the original series' formula, however, if you consider two episodes so far, which present a species and a situation that are not understood and the crew has to analyse and understand.

I can't say fans will like -My wife is a fan and doesn't consider the series a real part of the universe, even asking if it would be something in the new movies' universe. -But, my one concern is if the scripts getting tiresome insisting on the war or if they'll be more varied. If the change shown in the end of the nineth episode is what I think, It's possible said variety will start soon. On the other hand, if it's that's been something theorized by the fans, it could be the opposite, just replacing the war for such narrative, but not deviating from it.

In both cases, right now, I'm curious.
