I'm not a Trekkie. I saw and liked episodes, as much as I found episodes too slow, be it in the original series, in Next Generation or Voyager. I've never seen more than two or three episodes of Deep Space Nine, so I can't say if it'd be better, worse or similar.
Discovery is to me another attempt to understand better the universe, which has been quite interesting, but never to the point of wanting to follow every episode of any of its versions. And... this is the same,... Some episodes are good, others are slower than they should be... With a few differences.
the opening itself is a good analogy. Pretty visuals, slow unraveling... And I kinda miss Shatner's voiceover (Yes, I know he screwed the singer with that speech).
I can easily say the series seemed a bit more interesting generally speaking. Fans, however, might not like how less episodic and more of an arc. The episodes aren't poorly structured, but it is noticeable how they present aspects of the war between the Federation and the Klingons more than the episodes scenario itself.
The arc in question isn't bad. Its conclusion, in fact, I find very good, demonstrating something I've always valued in the series: victoy and sacrifice being to save others, against enemies with antiquated ideas of honor.
I must, though, say that, as much as it's been interesting so far, it is worrisome how much of the series is dedicated just to the war, and the end of episode 9, with a conclusion soon after a cliffhanger being resolved and giving interesting consequences to the scenario, followed by a possible change in the status quo.
Future episodes might be closer to the original series' formula, however, if you consider two episodes so far, which present a species and a situation that are not understood and the crew has to analyse and understand.
I can't say fans will like -My wife is a fan and doesn't consider the series a real part of the universe, even asking if it would be something in the new movies' universe. -But, my one concern is if the scripts getting tiresome insisting on the war or if they'll be more varied. If the change shown in the end of the nineth episode is what I think, It's possible said variety will start soon. On the other hand, if it's that's been something theorized by the fans, it could be the opposite, just replacing the war for such narrative, but not deviating from it.
In both cases, right now, I'm curious.
