Orville é Jornada nas Estrelas. Mais que Star Trek.
Ok, ok, vamos voltar um pouco. Eu vi a série já sabendo das controvérsias até certo ponto. Para quem não sabe, muitos fãs de Jornada vem se sentindo na Incrível Jornada em busca de algo seu.
Os filmes se voltaram para uma audiência mais aberta e alguns fãs se sentiram alienados pela falta de estórias de ficção científica mais próximas do estilo original (não, uma nave militar perto de outro planeta não é tão diferente de um projeto militar escondido na Terra. Você está falando de pegar o Expresso Galático 999 e saltar na última estação... Só...)
Além disso, a série que muitos esperavam, Discovery, deixou de ser uma continuação no universo original para ser algo no universo dos filmes, deixou de ser puramente episódica para ser mais perto de uma saga, e seu capitão não segue a tradição de honra e astúcia dos outros, sempre buscando a melhor forma de resolver os problemas de todos. E os klingons tem que ser mais terríveis, mais inumanos, mais sanguinários. Porque em vez de manter sua audiência, Jornada nas Estrelas prefere perder todos em busca de agradar as pessoas que já tem um zilhão e meio de filmes de ação com ligeira influência de FicCi (Ficção Científica... Acham que FicCi funciona bem?)
Eu, como fã ocasional, sempre senti que a apresentação dos personagens era um tanto silenciada, mas haviam momentos de crescimento pessoal ocasionais. A ideia sempre me pareceu ser que a tripulação como um todo era o foco, e que se focar demais em um personagem tiraria a graça da série.
Então, quando The Orville começa com uma variação da formula original -Especificamente se focando no capitão e como ele conseguiu sua nave -Eu não achei que fosse ruim, mas parecia que seria similar e que a comédia podia ser um empecilho.
Felizmente, não só a série segue a tripulação como um todo, desde então o humor -Ainda que mais notável que na série original -Não parece ser um problema. De fato, a série segue basicamente o mesmo molde de Jornada nas Estrelas ou Nova Geração, colocando os personagens em situações interessantes, mostrando sua capacidade e desenvolvendo sua interação.
Enquanto eu não acho os filmes ruins (não vi o último) e achei Discovery interessante, não só eu entendo porque um fã ficaria desapontado e irritado quando promessas ao fandom foram abandonadas, eu sinto muito mais a intenção de apresentar estórias interessantes de exploração, ficção científica e interação de personagens em The Orville que em Discovery, onde parece haver uma necessidade de "ser épico", ter ameaças monstruosas, e "manter a audiência entretida por cada segundo." Porque não há maior medo para um produtor do que a noção de fazer algo para uma audiência específica. Tudo tem que ser um sucesso com todos...
E se você, como eu, se preocupou com Seth MacFarlane falando sobre assuntos delicados, eu devo dizer que tudo foi bem feito e os assuntos foram bem tratados. O pesadelo de ter a maioria te julgando foi particularmente assustador para mim, tendo em vista o movimento de Justiça Social e Feminismo Interseccional influenciando a Europa e América do Norte no momento.
Vendo os últimos episódios de Discovery, talvez a ideia toda fosse estabelecer o universo espelho no universo dos filmes, ter Lorca como fugitivo que é e criar um twist na fórmula original. Deep Space 9 é mais estática, Voyager está perdida, Discovery é perseguida. Ou talvez seja uma tentativa mais abstrata de se ter um arco, seja este a guerra em si ou Lorca vivendo no universo normal. Em ambos os casos, parece-me que muito foi sacrificado para chegar a isso.
A fórmula original tem seus momentos cafonas, mas isso é parte da diversão para os fãs. A fórmula nova em Discovery me fez mais uma vez, como tantas recentemente, dizer "Não é ruim, mas não usa esse nome!" E a fórmula de The Orville se assemelha mais à original. Se for haver menos comédia na segunda temporada, como parece ser a intenção, talvez os fãs finalmente tenham o que procuram -E possam ter a satisfação de uma companhia perder uma audiência que tinha depois de fisgar com o nome para trair na execução.

Orville is Star Trek. More than Star Trek.
Ok, ok, let's go back a bit. I saw the series already knowing the controversies to a point. For those unaware, many fans of Star Trek have been feeling on The Incredible Journey bound to find their home.
The movies became for a more open audience and some fans felt alienated by the lack of sci-fi stories closer to the original style (no, a military ship near another planet is not that different from a military project hidden on Earth. You're just talking about taking the Galactic Express 999 and getting of on the last station... That's all...)
On top of that, the series many were waiting for, Discovery, went from being a continuation of the original universe to being something in the movie universe, went from being episodic to being closer to a saga, and its captain doesn't follow the others' tradition of honor and cunning, always looking for the best way to solve everyone's problems. And he klingons have to be more terrible, more inhuman, more bloodthirsty. Because instead of its audience, Star Trek prefers to loose all trying to please people that already have a zillion and a half action movies with slight Sci-Fi inflence (Do you think SyFy works? I prefere Sci-fi.)
I, as an occasional fan, always felt the presentation of the characters was somewaht muted, but there were personal growth moments on occasion. The idea always seemed to be crew as a whole being the focus, and that focusing too much on a character would ruin the fun.
So, when The Orville starts with a variation on the original formula -Specifically focusing on the captin and how he got his ship - I didn't think it was bad, but it looked like it was going to be similar and that the comedy could get in the way.
Fortunately, not only has the series followed the crew as a whole, since then the humour -Though more noticeable than in the oiginal series -Doesn't seem to be a problem. In fact, the series basically follows the same mold of Star Trek or Next Generation, setting the characters in interesting situations, showing their skills and developing their interaction.
While I don't find the movies bad (haven't seen the last one) and found Discovery interesting, I not only understand why a fan would be disappointed and irritated when the promises to the fandom were abandoned, I feel much more an intention to present interesting exploration stories, science fiction and character interaction in The Orville then in Discovery, where seems to be a need to "be epic", have monstrous threats, and "keep the audience entertained for every second." Because there's no bigger fear to a producer than the notion of making something for a specific audience. Everything has to be a success with everyone...
And if you, as me, was worried about Seth MacFarlane talking about touchy subjects, I must say it was all very well-made and the topics were well-discussed. The nightmare of having the majority judging you was particularly scary for me, seeing how the Social Justice movement and Intersectional Feminism are influencing Europe and North America at the moment.
Having seeing the last episodes of Discovery, maybe the whole idea was establishing the mirror universe in the movie universe, having Lorca as the fugitive he is and creating a twist in the original formula. Deep Space 9 is more stationary, Voyager is lost, Discovery is chased. Or maybe it's more of an abstract attempt to have an arc, be it the war iitself or Lorca living in the normal universe. In both cases, I feel a lot was sacrificed to get to this.
The original formula has its cheesy moments, but that's par for the course for the fans. The new formula in Discovery made me once again, as so many recently, say "it ain't bad, but don't use that name!" And The Orville's formula resembles the original more. If there's less comedy in the second season, as their intention seems to be, maybe the fans will finally have what they are looking for -And get the satisfaction of a company loosing an audience they had after baiting with a name and switching on the execution.
